KABA-SD Bar Scholarship Recipients Named

KABA-SD is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2016 KABA-SD Bar Exam Scholarships. KABA-SD has great confidence that both recipients are headed for meaningful careers and much success. After reviewing each candidate’s written application materials, conducting personal interviews, and conferring with references, the Scholarship Committee has decided to award this year’s KABA-SD Bar Scholarships to Jonathan Chikamoto and Suzane Santiago-Hinkle:

Jonathan Chikamoto obtained his undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies with a minor in Philosophy at Linfield College. He is currently a law student at California Western School of Law and is graduating in April 2017. Jonathan is active in the local community and involved in various organizations in and out of law school. In particular, Jonathan was the President of the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association (APALSA), a student representative for the Pan Asian Lawyers of San Diego (PALSD), and an active member of KABA-SD. Jonathan also frequently volunteers his time to various diversity bar organizations in San Diego, and will be heavily involved with the new Japanese American Bar Association in San Diego. He hopes to pursue a career in trust and estates.

Suzane Santiago-Hinkle obtained her undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Guam. She is currently a law student at Thomas Jefferson School of Law and is graduating in May 2017. Suzane has been involved in various organizations throughout law school. She served on two student organization boards, including the La Raza Law Students Association and the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association (APALSA). She will be serving as the President of APALSA for the 2016-2017 academic year and will also serve as a student representative for the Pan Asian Lawyers of San Diego (PALSD). Suzane hopes to pursue a career as an immigration attorney, with the ultimate goal of becoming a judicial officer.

Congratulations to both Jonathan Chikamoto and Suzane Santiago-Hinkle, and thank you to all who showed interest in and supported this year’s KABA-SD Bar Scholarship program.

KABA-SD Awarding Two $1,000 Bar Exam Scholarships: July 15, 2016 Application Deadline

KABA-SD is happy to announce that this year it is again awarding two $1,000 scholarships to eligible individuals to take or re-take the California State Bar examination. The scholarship will assist in covering the cost of the Bar Exam and is not restricted to Koreans or individuals of Korean descent. Selection factors include, but are not limited to, academic achievement, work experience, activities, and post law school goals; demonstrated leadership and commitment to community service, particularly to the Korean and Korean American communities and other diverse communities; and financial need.

The application deadline is July 15, 2016. The KABA-SD scholarship committee will select and notify finalists for interviews. Please read the scholarship announcement, and see the scholarship application form, for more information. Direct any questions to kaba.sd@gmail.com.

KABA-SD Bar Scholarship Recipients Named

KABA-SD is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2015 KABA-SD Bar Exam Scholarships. KABA-SD has great confidence that both recipients are headed for meaningful careers and much success. After reviewing each candidate’s written application materials, conducting personal interviews, and conferring with references, the Scholarship Committee has decided to award this year’s KABA-SD Bar Scholarships to Amanda Gracia and Julie T. Houth:

Amanda Gracia obtained her undergraduate degree in Political Science from Alabama State University. She is currently a third year law student at Thomas Jefferson School of Law, graduating in May 2016. Amanda is active in the local community, particularly in support of youth organization efforts. She served as a mentor in Thomas Jefferson’s Crawford Law Institute & Mentorship Bond, where she supported Crawford High students in their Mock Trial and Alternative Dispute Resolution projects. Amanda hopes to serve in an area of law that allows her to continue making an impact on youth. She looks forward to more opportunities to learn about the Korean culture and serving as a future leader at KABA-SD events.

Julie T. Houth obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of California Irvine. She attended Thomas Jefferson School of law, and graduated in December 2014. Julie has been involved in various organizations throughout law school, and is still active in the community. During law school, she was involved in the Public Interest Law Foundation where she participated in a number of community service events. She was also involved with the Immigration Law Society at Thomas Jefferson where she organized a tour of an immigration detention center, volunteered at a citizenship fair, and hosted immigration career panels. Julie continues to contribute her time to helping members of the community. She hopes to pursue a career as an immigration attorney and to assist individuals with limited English skills. The Board is pleased to award this scholarship to Julie, and we look forward to seeing her at future KABA-SD events!

KABA-SD 2015 Annual Meeting and Elections

KABA-SD Annual Meeting: Wednesday, August 19

KABA-SD will be holding its Annual Meeting at 5:30pm on Wednesday, August 19 at the San Diego County Bar Association Center (401 West A Street, Suite 1100, in downtown San Diego). The Annual Meeting is open to all KABA-SD members, who are encouraged to attend and participate. At the Annual Meeting, KABA-SD will also hold elections to select the new Board.

Interested in Serving on the KABA-SD Board? Elections are Upcoming!

Are you interested in becoming more involved with the Korean American legal community, in making new friends, in networking, or in taking on a leadership community? If so, we encourage you to run for a position on KABA-SD’s 2015-16 Board of Directors. Elections are upcoming, and will be for the following positions:

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Director-at-Large (5)

The newly-elected Board will also be selecting one law student representative from among those interested at each of San Diego’s 3 law schools. For all interested in serving on the Board – whether as an officer, a director, or a student representative – please prepare a brief (1 page maximum) candidate statement and note the following deadlines and schedule:

  • Friday, August 14: Nominations and Candidate Statements Due (email to kaba.sd@gmail.com)
  • Monday, August 17: Candidate Statements and Ballots Emailed to KABA-SD Members
  • Wednesday, August 19: Annual Meeting and Election @ 5:30pm (SDCBA Bar Center)
  • Friday, August 28: Absentee Ballots Due
  • Thursday, September 3: New Board Announced (including selection of law student representatives)
  • Tuesday, September 22: Installation of Board and Officers at KABA-SD Annual Dinner

Any and all current, dues-paid KABA-SD members are eligible to vote in the elections. Attorney members who are licensed to practice and in good standing with the California State Bar are eligible to serve as an officer or director-at-large.
