KABA-SD Endorses Patricia Hollenbeck for San Diego County Bar Association Board of Directors

The KABA-SD Board has voted to endorse Patricia Hollenbeck for a seat on the San Diego County Bar Association (SDCBA) Board of Directors. Ms. Hollenbeck has held leadership position in various bar associations, including Lawyers Club of San Diego, for which she served as President of Lawyers Club in 2014-2015. During her career, Ms. Hollenbeck, a partner at Duane Morris, and a daughter to an immigrant mother from Peru, has consistently supported other diversity bar organizations, especially through her involvement withLawyers Club. Once on the SDCBA Board, Ms. Hollenbeck intends to continue promoting diversity through SDCBA by developing more interactive partnerships between minority bar associations, such as KABA-SD, and the SDCBA. The KABA-SD Board is proud to support Ms. Hollenbeck in her candidacy for the SDCBA Board.

KABA-SD Endorses Frank Barone for San Diego County Bar Association Board of Directors

The KABA-SD Board has voted to endorse Frank Barone for a seat on the San Diego County Bar Association (SDCBA) Board of Directors. Ms. Barone has been involved in various bar associations, including Tom Homann LGBT Law Association, as well as the SDCBA. Mr. Barone, who has served as a public defender for approximately 19 years, also co-founded San Diego County Public Defender Community Outreach Program. Throughout his career, Mr. Barone, has supported the rights of LGBT and women. Once on the SDCBA Board, Mr. Barone intends to continue promoting diversity, with a focus on attorney mentoring, and will enhance the Board by providing his perspective and experience in indigent defense. The KABA-SD Board is proud to support Mr. Barone in his candidacy for the SDCBA Board.

KABA-SD Bar Scholarship Recipients Named

KABA-SD is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2016 KABA-SD Bar Exam Scholarships. KABA-SD has great confidence that both recipients are headed for meaningful careers and much success. After reviewing each candidate’s written application materials, conducting personal interviews, and conferring with references, the Scholarship Committee has decided to award this year’s KABA-SD Bar Scholarships to Jonathan Chikamoto and Suzane Santiago-Hinkle:

Jonathan Chikamoto obtained his undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies with a minor in Philosophy at Linfield College. He is currently a law student at California Western School of Law and is graduating in April 2017. Jonathan is active in the local community and involved in various organizations in and out of law school. In particular, Jonathan was the President of the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association (APALSA), a student representative for the Pan Asian Lawyers of San Diego (PALSD), and an active member of KABA-SD. Jonathan also frequently volunteers his time to various diversity bar organizations in San Diego, and will be heavily involved with the new Japanese American Bar Association in San Diego. He hopes to pursue a career in trust and estates.

Suzane Santiago-Hinkle obtained her undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Guam. She is currently a law student at Thomas Jefferson School of Law and is graduating in May 2017. Suzane has been involved in various organizations throughout law school. She served on two student organization boards, including the La Raza Law Students Association and the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association (APALSA). She will be serving as the President of APALSA for the 2016-2017 academic year and will also serve as a student representative for the Pan Asian Lawyers of San Diego (PALSD). Suzane hopes to pursue a career as an immigration attorney, with the ultimate goal of becoming a judicial officer.

Congratulations to both Jonathan Chikamoto and Suzane Santiago-Hinkle, and thank you to all who showed interest in and supported this year’s KABA-SD Bar Scholarship program.

KABA-SD Awarding Two $1,000 Bar Exam Scholarships: July 15, 2016 Application Deadline

KABA-SD is happy to announce that this year it is again awarding two $1,000 scholarships to eligible individuals to take or re-take the California State Bar examination. The scholarship will assist in covering the cost of the Bar Exam and is not restricted to Koreans or individuals of Korean descent. Selection factors include, but are not limited to, academic achievement, work experience, activities, and post law school goals; demonstrated leadership and commitment to community service, particularly to the Korean and Korean American communities and other diverse communities; and financial need.

The application deadline is July 15, 2016. The KABA-SD scholarship committee will select and notify finalists for interviews. Please read the scholarship announcement, and see the scholarship application form, for more information. Direct any questions to kaba.sd@gmail.com.

KABA-SD Endorses Renée Galente for San Diego County Bar Association Board of Directors

The KABA-SD Board has voted to endorse Renée Galente for a seat on the San Diego County Bar Association (SDCBA) Board of Directors. Ms. Galente has held leadership positions in various bar associations, including California Women Lawyers, San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association (“SDLRLA”), Lawyers Club of San Diego, and the Thomas Jefferson School of Law Alumni Association. During her career, she has consistently supported other diversity bar organizations, including supporting past events put on by both KABA-SD and SDLRLA. Once on the SDCBA Board, Ms. Galente intends to mentor law students and young attorneys, and to continue collaboration between the different diversity bar organizations. The KABA-SD Board is proud to support Ms. Galente in her candidacy for the SDCBA Board.

KABA-SD Endorses Ana Romanskaya for San Diego County Bar Association Board of Directors

The KABA-SD Board has voted to endorse Anna Romanskaya for a seat on the San Diego County Bar Association (SDCBA) Board of Directors. Ms. Romanskaya has strong leadership skills and is deeply committed to diversity. She has been involved and has held leadership positions in local and national bar associations, including the SDCBA, Lawyers Club, and the American Bar Association (ABA). Ms. Romanskaya just completed her 3 year term as a board member for Lawyers Club, where she focused her service on advancing the status of women in law and society. As the incoming Chair-Elect of the Young Lawyers Division of the ABA, she has intimate knowledge of major national issues regarding the administration of and access to legal services. Ms. Romanskaya will be able to educate the SDCBA on these issues and raise awareness at the local level. Ms. Romanskaya promises to focus on creating leadership training for young lawyers, and on supporting and collaborating with diversity bar organizations. The KABA-SD Board is proud to support Ms. Romanskaya and her vision to improve the San Diego County Bar Association as one if its Directors.

KABA-SD Endorses Srinivas Hanumadass for San Diego County Bar Association Board of Directors

The KABA-SD Board has voted to endorse Srinivas Hanumadass for a seat on the San Diego County Bar Association (SDCBA) Board of Directors. Mr. Hanumadass is strongly committed to diversity and the community, having served as president for two terms of the South Asian Bar Association of San Diego (SABA-SD). He also actively supports other diversity bar organizations, which directly benefited KABA-SD through his efforts to co-founding our first speed networking event. Mr. Hanumadass’ primary focus is on mentoring younger attorneys and law students, and he intends to continue his efforts to put them in positions to succeed and pay it forward to the next generation of future attorneys once on the SDCBA Board. His passion for mentoring combined with his significant involvement in the community and in the legal profession makes Mr. Hanumadass a great candidate for the SDCBA Board.

KABA-SD Endorses Johanna Schiavoni for San Diego County Bar Association Board of Directors

The KABA-SD Board has voted to endorse Johanna Schiavoni for a seat on the San Diego County Bar Association (SDCBA) Board of Directors. Ms. Schiavoni promises to prioritize career development, diversity and inclusion, and transparency in the governance of the SDCBA. Specifically, she intends to promote diversity by encouraging diverse leaders to run for committee positions and influencing policy so that current leaders can be trained to be aware of diversity. Ms. Schiavoni has prior leadership experience and relationships at the SDCBA, which will better enable her to make changes within SDCBA starting from the beginning of her term. The KABA-SD Board is proud to support Ms. Schiavoni and her vision to improve the San Diego Country Bar Association as one of its Directors.

KABA-SD is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2015 KABA-SD Bar Exam Scholarships. KABA-SD has great confidence that both recipients are headed for meaningful careers and much success. After reviewing each candidate’s written application materials, conducting personal interviews, and conferring with references, the Scholarship Committee has decided to award this year’s KABA-SD Bar Scholarships to Amanda Gracia and Julie T. Houth:

Amanda Gracia obtained her undergraduate degree in Political Science from Alabama State University. She is currently a third year law student at Thomas Jefferson School of Law, graduating in May 2016. Amanda is active in the local community, particularly in support of youth organization efforts. She served as a mentor in Thomas Jefferson’s Crawford Law Institute & Mentorship Bond, where she supported Crawford High students in their Mock Trial and Alternative Dispute Resolution projects. Amanda hopes to serve in an area of law that allows her to continue making an impact on youth. She looks forward to more opportunities to learn about the Korean culture and serving as a future leader at KABA-SD events.

Julie T. Houth obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of California Irvine. She attended Thomas Jefferson School of law, and graduated in December 2014. Julie has been involved in various organizations throughout law school, and is still active in the community. During law school, she was involved in the Public Interest Law Foundation where she participated in a number of community service events. She was also involved with the Immigration Law Society at Thomas Jefferson where she organized a tour of an immigration detention center, volunteered at a citizenship fair, and hosted immigration career panels. Julie continues to contribute her time to helping members of the community. She hopes to pursue a career as an immigration attorney and to assist individuals with limited English skills. The Board is pleased to award this scholarship to Julie, and we look forward to seeing her at future KABA-SD events!
